Transit Through China: What to See During a Layover

China is one of the most popular layover hubs when flying between different parts of the globe. Hundreds of flights depart daily from major Chinese cities to nearly every country in the world, even to the most exotic locations. A long layover in China is a perfect opportunity to explore the most interesting local attractions and soak up the unique Asian atmosphere. Read on for recommendations on what to see in various cities, and then get started on planning your trip to China.

Transit Visa and Entry Rules

Belarusian citizens can transit through China without a visa since an agreement between the two countries allows them to stay on Chinese soil for up to 30 days per entry without additional paperwork. However, travelers from other countries may need a 24-hour transit visa for China – please check the details at your embassy.

Practical Tips

  • Allow at least 6–8 hours to leave the airport and explore the city. Keep in mind that passport control, baggage procedures, and other necessary steps may take another 1–2 hours. Without proper planning, a visa-free transit through Beijing can lead to a missed flight.
  • Plan your route ahead of time. If you have limited time, choose one or two attractions that are close together. Alternatively, consider booking tours in China to fully explore the country.
  • Opt for the fastest forms of transportation – the subway or a taxi – but try to avoid rush hour.
  • Carry some cash in the local currency or set up mobile wallets – Alipay or WeChat Pay. Local payment systems are widely used in China, while international cards (Visa, Mastercard) are rarely accepted. Keep this in mind when booking hotels.

What to See in Beijing?

Grab a taxi right at the airport (though be prepared to wait in line) and head out to see the main attractions. What can you see in Beijing in 6 hours? A visit to the Forbidden City—the largest palace complex in the world—is a must. If time permits, check out the Temple of Heaven (15th century) and the Summer Palace by the lake. You can also reach the Great Wall from Beijing – it’s about a 70 km drive. The best option is to book a group tour right from the airport.

What to See in Shanghai in One Day?

Take in the views from the Shanghai Tower’s glass floor (Lujiazui Metro), stroll along the city’s main pedestrian street – Nanjing Road (East Nanjing Road Metro) and the Bund. Alternatively, head to Disneyland and spend some time on your favorite rides. How do you get from Pudong Airport to downtown Shanghai? You can take a taxi or the subway – it’s much faster.
