One of the oldest buildings still standing today, steeped in blood and pain—that’s the Colosseum. For nearly two thousand years, Rome’s main symbol has captivated both locals and tourists. The city’s skyline would be incomplete without this imposing amphitheater, whose history mirrors the passage of eras. We explain all the essential details about this landmark, and you can start choosing a tour to Italy.
History
Giving a brief account of the Colosseum’s history, which began in AD 72, is nearly impossible—over the centuries, countless events have taken place within its walls. The Roman Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian decided to build the amphitheater on lands that once belonged to the previous ruler, Nero, in order to erase his memory. Construction took eight years. Choose group tours to see the results with your own eyes.
For a long time, the Colosseum hosted spectacular large-scale performances: gladiator battles, animal hunts, and even naval reenactments. Beginning in the sixth century, the building started to fall into ruin—first used as a burial ground, then as a fortress, and during the Middle Ages, it was dismantled to reuse its materials. Today, the Colosseum is protected, and its name is once again heard around the world—it has been named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. A trip to Italy is the perfect reason to visit one of these wonders.
