Traveling to Hainan: when to go here?

Hainan Island is located in the South China Sea off the southern coast of China. Its popularity has increased incredibly in recent years. It attracts tourists with its warm climate and picturesque beaches. Let's look at the water temperature and weather in Hainan by month.

When is the best time to go to Hainan?

Hainan has a tropical climate, so the year is divided into dry and wet seasons. From December to April there is practically no rain, and the sea is warm. The air and water temperatures drop so much that a comfortable vacation is guaranteed. The only drawback of this period may be fogs.

Winter is cold in many parts of China, so many people come here during these months to escape the cold and enjoy the warm winter holidays. However, it is worth noting that the cost of travel increases at this time due to increased demand for tourism.

If we look more specifically at the temperature by month, then in March-April the weather is sunny and warm. Not too hot for travel yet. Average temperature: 18 – 24℃. From December to February there is winter in Hainan, but not cold, without snow. Rainfall decreases and a sunny dry season begins. Average temperature: 24 – 28℃.

If you need to find a place to stay in Hainan, TravelHub has compiled a selection of hotels to make your stay on this island unforgettable:

When is it better not to go to Hainan?

The rainy season in Hainan begins in May and ends in October. At this time the weather is hot and the sea is warm. Don't miss the opportunity to take a dip in the water and enjoy the waves. Holiday prices are also falling, although those who want to save money should remember that in Hainan the rainy season coincides with the typhoon season. However, tropical cyclones rarely affect the resort of Sanya in the south of the island.

Peak precipitation occurs in July and August. Fogs are more common in the north of the island, in the Haikou region, but in the south, in Sanya, they are rare. So if you don't mind the humidity, the rainy season may be a good time to visit.

In general, summers (from May to September) in Hainan are hot. The highest temperature ever recorded is 39℃ and the average temperature is 26 – 33℃. From October to November the weather becomes a little milder, but still hot. Average temperature: 25 – 30℃.

The best beaches in Hainan

Hainan Island has many beaches, such as West Island, Houhai, Riyuei Bay, Shimei Bay and Wuzhizhou. We have chosen the three most popular.

The No. 1 beach in China, Yalong Bay, offers visitors 7 km of soft white sand and warm, clear water. Surrounded by green hills, this bay is considered one of the most picturesque beaches in the Middle Kingdom. Here you can not only sunbathe and swim, but also snorkel and dive among the coral reefs.

For an incredible nighttime atmosphere, head to Sanya Bay Beach. It stretches for 22 km on the southern coast of the island, just a few steps from the city center of Sanya. The beach is busy during the day, especially during Chinese New Year. But at night it's a great place to stroll and watch the locals dancing on the beach.

For the perfect combination of sea, sun and local life, Dadonghai Beach is a stunning place to spend the day. The beach is located between green hills, about 4 km southeast of the center of Sanya. Here you can enjoy coconut palms, soft white sand and bright blue water.

China is a country of contrasts, where the difference between north and south is especially striking. Visiting different parts of China will help you gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. After visiting China's southernmost province, head north to explore the culture of northern China.
